About the role
This interview tests whether you can lead the editorial and practical production of live and recorded radio. The panel wants evidence of sharp judgement, confident control-room decisions and a strong ear for structure, pace and sound. You should also show how you direct presenters, support contributors and maintain standards under pressure.
How to prepare
- Listen critically to recent output in the format and note where its structure, pace or use of sound could improve.
- Choose examples of live problems you handled and be precise about your cues and decisions.
- Prepare to explain how you verify callers, guests, archive material and claims before transmission.
- Review your approach to scripting links, shaping interviews and editing speech for clarity without changing meaning.
- Think of feedback you gave a presenter or producer that improved the final programme.
Common mistakes
- Talking only about guests and topics instead of the sound and shape of the programme.
- Giving vague answers about live failures without explaining the cue sequence.
- Ignoring verification because a contribution arrives during transmission.
- Taking sole credit for work shared with presenters, engineers and junior producers.
