About the role
This interview examines senior responsibility for HVAC, water and drainage services in occupied buildings. The panel is looking for defensible calculations, sensible plant choices, close spatial coordination and a measured approach to commissioning and performance faults.
How to prepare
- Review cooling loads, ventilation, pump duties, pressure losses, drainage falls and equipment access.
- Prepare one plant selection where energy, maintenance, power reliability and available space pulled in different directions.
- Choose a coordination clash and explain the options considered before the team agreed a route.
- Think through how you would diagnose low flow, poor cooling, high humidity or unstable pressure using measured data.
- Prepare an example of leading a contractor or junior engineer through a technical correction.
Common mistakes
- Selecting plant from nominal capacity without checking actual operating conditions.
- Ignoring maintenance access, condensate drainage or controls when discussing an HVAC layout.
- Changing a coordinated route without tracing the effect on other services and the structure.
- Suggesting equipment replacement before using readings to isolate the fault.
