About the role
This senior engineering interview examines how you design, test, troubleshoot and accept fibre links. Expect the panel to probe optical loss, OTDR traces, splice and connector quality, restoration choices and safe control of field work. Good answers explain the evidence behind each diagnosis and how you confirm that a repair is durable.
How to prepare
- Revise optical loss budgets, connector and splice losses, power margins and the limits of each test method.
- Practise interpreting common OTDR events and explaining what must be checked at the physical location.
- Prepare a fibre fault example from alarm or complaint through localisation, repair and service validation.
- Review installation acceptance checks for joints, closures, trays, connectors, labels and records.
- Think through safe controls for excavation, roadside work, laser exposure and access to live facilities.
Common mistakes
- Reading an OTDR trace as a complete diagnosis without checking the route and other measurements.
- Quoting a loss figure without explaining wavelength, reference method and design margin.
- Accepting good end-to-end power while ignoring poor workmanship that will create future faults.
- Allowing restoration pressure to override excavation, traffic or optical safety controls.
