About the role
A security engineer protects a company's applications, cloud accounts and customer data from attack and misuse. At senior level you run threat modelling with product teams, review code and configurations, lead incident response and make sure personal data is handled in line with the Nigeria Data Protection Act. The panel wants to see sound judgement on risk, not fear of everything.
How to prepare
- Prepare a threat model of a product you know, covering what you protect, who attacks it and the controls that matter most.
- Have an incident story ready with how you detected it, contained it, communicated it and what changed afterwards.
- Revise the core duties under the Nigeria Data Protection Act, such as lawful processing, breach reporting and data subject rights.
- Practise explaining a serious risk to a business leader in plain words, ending with a clear recommendation.
- Think about how you get developers to fix issues without becoming the team that blocks every release.
Common mistakes
- Treating every finding as critical, which leaves nobody sure what to fix first.
- Sharing details of a past employer's vulnerabilities that you have no right to disclose.
- Speaking only about tools and scanners and never about trade-offs with the business.
