About this interview
Salary negotiation practice helps you get ready for the conversation after a job offer, when you agree pay and terms. You work on knowing your value, making a clear case for what you want, responding calmly to pushback and agreeing a package that works for both sides.
How to prepare
- Research typical pay for the role, level and city through job adverts, recruiters and people in the field.
- Decide your target, your lowest acceptable figure and the reasons behind both before the call.
- List the parts of the package beyond base pay, such as allowances, leave, training and remote days.
- Practise stating your number calmly and then stopping to let the other side respond.
- Prepare a short case linking your skills and results to the value you bring.
Common mistakes
- Accepting the first offer on the spot without asking for time to consider it.
- Making the case about personal expenses instead of your value to the employer.
- Giving an ultimatum you are not prepared to follow through on.
