About the role
A relationship manager for small and medium businesses grows a portfolio of business customers for a bank or lender. You find new clients, learn how their businesses make money, match them to accounts, loans and payment products, and keep the relationship strong. The panel is deciding whether you can bring in business, assess risk sensibly and handle objections with confidence.
How to prepare
- Study the bank's SME products and be ready to match them to a typical trader, manufacturer or service business.
- Prepare a story about winning a client, with how you found them, what they needed and what you closed.
- Practise handling a common objection, such as a customer who is happy with their current bank.
- Revise how to read basic financial statements and spot cash flow problems.
- Have your past targets and results ready in clear figures you can explain.
Common mistakes
- Talking about relationships without showing actual revenue or deposits brought in.
- Pushing a product before understanding the client's business.
- Ignoring credit risk in the rush to grow the book.
