About the role

This interview covers the inspection steps around welded fabrication, from material and fit-up checks to final records. The panel is looking for careful observation, an ability to follow approved criteria and enough integrity to stop or report work when evidence is missing.

How to prepare

  1. Revise common weld discontinuities, their likely causes and how they appear during visual inspection.
  2. Review joint preparation, fit-up, pre-weld checks and basic weld terminology.
  3. Practise reading a simple fabrication drawing, weld symbol and weld map.
  4. Understand what visual, penetrant, magnetic particle, ultrasonic and radiographic testing can reveal.
  5. Prepare an example of documenting a defect or checking work against a requirement.

Common mistakes

  • Calling every visible feature a reject without referring to acceptance criteria.
  • Signing for work you did not inspect or cannot verify from approved evidence.
  • Confusing a welding procedure with a welder qualification record.
  • Reporting a defect without marking its location or preserving traceability.
