About the award
A public policy fellowship interview selects people who want to shape how government and public institutions make decisions. The panel looks at your understanding of a policy area, your ability to analyse problems and trade-offs, your motivation for public service and how you work with stakeholders such as officials, communities and businesses.
How to prepare
- Choose one policy issue you care about and know its causes, the current approach and possible fixes.
- Practise weighing trade-offs, such as cost against reach, rather than arguing for one perfect answer.
- Prepare an example of working with people who disagreed with you and how you found common ground.
- Read recent public reports and news in your chosen area so your facts are current.
- Be clear about why public service and not a private sector career.
Common mistakes
- Giving opinions without evidence or a sense of what is practical to implement.
- Arguing from strong personal opinion instead of analysing the policy on its merits.
- Ignoring the people a policy affects and focusing only on theory.
