About the award
This interview selects graduates for practical work supporting legislative research, committee activity and public engagement. The panel wants evidence that you can analyse a policy problem, write for busy decision makers, handle competing views fairly and explain why public service matters to you.
How to prepare
- Review the programme's official guidance for its current focus, eligibility rules and expected duties.
- Learn the main stages by which a proposal becomes law in the relevant legislature.
- Practise turning a long report into a short brief with options, evidence and unanswered questions.
- Prepare examples of careful research, teamwork and service to a community or institution.
- Choose one public problem and compare legislative and non-legislative responses to it.
Common mistakes
- Treating every public problem as something a new law can solve.
- Making strong claims without explaining the quality or limits of the evidence.
- Describing the legislature only as a platform for personal visibility.
- Ignoring confidentiality and neutrality when discussing stakeholder work.
