About the role
This interview tests how you connect a fintech product to payment providers and keep transactions correct when networks or partners fail. The panel is looking for sound API design, careful handling of money movement and evidence-led incident work.
How to prepare
- Review idempotency, payment state machines, retry policies and webhook signature verification.
- Prepare an example of tracing one transaction across your service and a provider.
- Practise explaining how authorisation, capture, reversal, refund and settlement differ.
- Revisit monitoring for callback delays, error rates and reconciliation breaks.
- Think through how unreliable mobile data or a provider outage affects the customer journey.
Common mistakes
- Treating a timeout as proof that a transaction failed.
- Ignoring duplicate or out-of-order webhook delivery.
- Discussing happy paths without explaining reconciliation and recovery.
- Sharing partner credentials or confidential transaction data.
