About the role
This interview tests whether you can lead a corporate and commercial practice as both a senior lawyer and an owner of the business. The panel will look for sound transaction judgement, a credible approach to winning work, confident client leadership and evidence that you develop other lawyers without compromising quality.
How to prepare
- Select two transactions that show the decisions you personally led and the commercial outcome of your advice.
- Develop a realistic view of the sectors and client relationships you would grow in the practice.
- Review how you approach conflicts, matter acceptance, pricing and supervision at partner level.
- Prepare an example of turning a difficult negotiation into an agreement the client could use.
- Be ready to explain how you review work, delegate responsibility and develop future practice leaders.
Common mistakes
- Taking credit for a team result without separating your decisions from the work of others.
- Treating business development as a list of contacts rather than a disciplined plan for serving clients.
- Giving technically correct advice without explaining the commercial choice it supports.
- Sharing client details that should remain confidential.
