About the role

This interview tests how you would protect vessels, port facilities and restricted waterside areas. The panel is looking for alert observation, disciplined access control, safe emergency actions and concise radio and written reports. Strong answers respect the security plan and the chain of command while showing sound judgement when conditions change.

How to prepare

  1. Review the purpose of restricted zones, gangway control, patrol logs and visitor authorisation.
  2. Practise describing suspicious activity using precise locations, times, people and actions.
  3. Prepare an example of following a safety or security procedure when others wanted a shortcut.
  4. Revise the first actions for fire, unauthorised access and a suspicious item near a vessel.
  5. Check the hiring organisation's instructions for any required maritime training or certification.

Common mistakes

  • Approaching a possible threat alone instead of observing, reporting and following procedure.
  • Allowing familiarity with a visitor to replace proper access checks.
  • Giving vague radio messages without a clear location or description.
  • Ignoring safety hazards because they do not initially look like security incidents.
