About the role
This interview tests how you recognise and control hazards around vessels, quays and marine work areas. The panel is looking for calm judgement, confidence to pause unsafe work, practical knowledge of permits and emergency actions, and accurate reporting. Strong answers explain the order of your actions and when you would escalate.
How to prepare
- Review the steps for identifying a hazard, assessing risk and choosing controls.
- Practise explaining how you would check a permit before hot work or another high-risk task begins.
- Prepare an example of raising a safety concern respectfully, even if it comes from training or a placement.
- Revise immediate actions for a spill, injury, fire alarm and person in the water without inventing site procedures.
- Check the relevant official maritime and port authorities for current safety and certification rules.
- Practise writing a brief factual near-miss report that separates observations from assumptions.
Common mistakes
- Rushing to clean a spill before controlling the area and raising the alarm.
- Treating a permit as paperwork instead of checking the job, location and controls.
- Blaming a worker before gathering facts about the task and conditions.
- Quoting rules confidently when you are unsure which site procedure applies.
