About this interview
A law firm training contract interview decides who joins a firm as a trainee lawyer. The panel looks at why you want to practise law, how you reason through a legal problem, how well you understand the business side of the firm's clients and how you would look after those clients.
How to prepare
- Research the firm's main practice areas, recent deals or cases and the clients it serves.
- Practise breaking down a legal problem into issues, relevant law and a clear conclusion.
- Follow business news so you can discuss how current events affect the firm's clients.
- Prepare examples of client service or teamwork from internships, law clinic or part-time work.
- Be ready to explain why commercial law and why this firm in particular.
Common mistakes
- Giving a generic reason for law that could come from any applicant.
- Ignoring the commercial side and talking only about legal theory.
- Guessing at law you do not know instead of reasoning openly from principles.
