About the role
A junior game designer helps shape mechanics, levels and player feedback, then tests ideas with the wider development team. The interview looks for structured creative thinking, awareness of scope and an ability to learn from playtesting rather than defend every first idea.
How to prepare
- Play the studio's relevant games and note how they teach rules, reward progress and manage difficulty.
- Choose two portfolio projects and prepare to explain your contribution, constraints and design changes.
- Practise turning one mechanic into a short design document with rules, player feedback and edge cases.
- Prepare an example of a playtest result that caused you to revise an idea.
- Review the engine and prototyping tools named in the vacancy and be honest about your level with each.
Common mistakes
- Describing games only as a player without analysing their rules and feedback systems.
- Claiming team work as your own without making your contribution clear.
- Proposing a large feature without considering time, platform or technical limits.
- Treating playtest criticism as a threat instead of useful evidence.
