About the role
An architectural assistant supports design development, drawing production and coordination under the guidance of an architect. The panel wants to see sound design thinking, precise documentation, confident use of design software and a constructive response to review comments.
How to prepare
- Select two portfolio projects and explain the brief, your contribution and the decisions you made.
- Review how plans, elevations, sections, details and schedules relate to one another.
- Practise describing how you organise layers, views, revisions and drawing checks in your main software.
- Prepare an example of finding and resolving conflicting design information.
- Think about how climate, access and material choice affect a practical building design.
Common mistakes
- Showing attractive images without explaining the design problem or your contribution.
- Treating drawing coordination as someone else's responsibility.
- Claiming advanced software ability without being able to explain your workflow.
- Defending every design choice instead of showing how you respond to useful feedback.
