About the role
An IT support technician keeps an office's computers, printers, network and user accounts working so staff can get on with their jobs. You set up laptops, reset passwords, fix connection problems, log tickets and explain fixes patiently to people who are not technical. The panel is looking for a methodical troubleshooter with a helpful attitude and good security habits.
How to prepare
- Practise talking through how you diagnose a common problem step by step, such as a laptop that cannot connect to the office network.
- Revise networking basics: IP addresses, DNS, wireless versus cable and how to tell where a connection fails.
- Prepare a story about helping a frustrated or non-technical user and how you kept them calm.
- Think about how you would prioritise several tickets at once when one of them is the managing director's laptop.
- Review basic security habits such as handling passwords, spotting phishing and locking screens.
Common mistakes
- Using jargon with users who just want their problem fixed.
- Guessing at fixes without a clear process or without writing down what you tried.
- Forgetting security, for example by sharing passwords to save time.
