About the role
This interview tests whether you understand how packets move and can troubleshoot an IP network without guessing. The panel is looking for accurate subnetting, a layered diagnostic method, cautious live changes and handovers that let another engineer continue the work without repeating it.
How to prepare
- Practise subnetting and identifying network, broadcast and usable host addresses.
- Review how switches learn MAC addresses and how routers choose among routes.
- Revise the purpose of ARP, VLANs, default gateways, DNS, DHCP and common transport protocols.
- Practise tracing a failed connection from physical state through addressing, routing and application reachability.
- Prepare a simple change plan with pre-checks, validation steps and a rollback trigger.
Common mistakes
- Memorising commands without explaining what each output proves.
- Blaming DNS before checking whether basic IP reachability works.
- Making a live configuration change without a saved state or rollback path.
- Giving an incident handover that omits tests already completed and their results.
