About the role
A medical officer sees and treats patients, handles emergencies, prescribes safely and keeps clear notes, often with limited staff, equipment and drugs. The panel is deciding whether your clinical reasoning is sound, whether you know your limits and whether you work well with the wider team.
How to prepare
- Refresh the emergency management of common acute presentations in your setting.
- Prepare a case where you worked with limited resources and still kept the patient safe.
- Be ready to explain when and how you refer or call for senior help.
- Think through how you break bad news clearly and kindly.
- Review safe prescribing basics, including doses and common interactions.
Common mistakes
- Jumping to a diagnosis without explaining how you reached it.
- Not knowing when to escalate or refer.
- Treating notes and documentation as an afterthought.
