About the role

A head of public relations protects and builds reputation through media strategy, executive advice and disciplined crisis response. The interview tests whether you can make sound calls with incomplete information, influence senior leaders, maintain credible relationships and run a team that produces accurate, useful communication.

How to prepare

  1. Map the main audiences and reputation risks you would assess when joining an unfamiliar organisation.
  2. Prepare a crisis example that shows how you established facts, advised leaders and adjusted the response.
  3. Review how you evaluate sentiment, message uptake, trust and business effects without overstating causation.
  4. Choose an example of constructively challenging a senior stakeholder on a communication decision.
  5. Practise explaining when silence, a holding statement or a fuller response would each be appropriate.

Common mistakes

  • Treating media coverage as the strategy instead of linking it to trust, risk and organisational goals.
  • Making a crisis response sound decisive while ignoring fact checking, legal input or affected customers.
  • Claiming credit for favourable coverage without explaining what you personally decided or influenced.
  • Avoiding difficult advice to executives when the role requires independent judgement.
