About the role

A communications officer manages how an organisation speaks to the media and the public. You build relationships with journalists, write press releases and statements, prepare spokespeople, monitor coverage and help lead the response when a crisis breaks. The panel wants clear writing, sound judgement and the ability to get approvals quickly from senior people.

How to prepare

  1. Prepare a press release or statement you wrote and be ready to explain your choices.
  2. Think through how you would respond to a damaging story in the first few hours.
  3. Revise how you build and maintain relationships with journalists and editors.
  4. Prepare an example of managing approvals with several senior stakeholders under time pressure.
  5. Study the organisation's recent coverage and be ready to discuss it.

Common mistakes

  • Writing statements that are vague, defensive or full of jargon.
  • Overpromising coverage you cannot control.
  • Ignoring accuracy and approvals in a rush to respond.
