About the role
The head of facilities management is accountable for safe, reliable and cost-controlled building services across a portfolio. The interview tests how you set strategy, use asset information, govern suppliers and lead a coordinated response when essential services fail.
How to prepare
- Map one portfolio you managed, including its asset types, service model and major operational risks.
- Prepare an example of moving a team from reactive repairs towards planned maintenance.
- Review how you set service levels, inspect delivery and challenge contractor invoices.
- Think through your command structure for power, fire, water, lift or security incidents.
- Be ready to show how facilities decisions support both occupier experience and asset value.
Common mistakes
- Discussing maintenance activity without connecting it to risk, reliability or user impact.
- Relying on contractors without showing how their work is verified.
- Cutting preventive work without explaining the later operational and financial consequences.
