About the role
The head of event production is accountable for turning a creative event idea into a safe, costed and executable live operation. This interview tests strategic planning, technical and supplier coordination, financial control and leadership under live conditions. The panel will expect evidence that you can protect the audience experience while making firm operational decisions.
How to prepare
- Choose a complex live event and map your responsibility from brief and design through build, show and breakdown.
- Prepare examples of controlling scope, approving changes and forecasting the final event cost.
- Review how you establish command, communication and escalation across site and technical teams.
- Think through your contingencies for power, weather, crowd movement, access and supplier failure.
- Prepare a case where you challenged a client request and proposed a workable alternative.
Common mistakes
- Focusing on the creative reveal while neglecting site, safety and technical dependencies.
- Claiming flawless delivery without discussing contingencies or difficult decisions.
- Allowing client status to override an agreed operational control.
- Keeping authority centralised so that teams cannot respond quickly during the show.
