About the role

A graduate industrial engineer studies how people, equipment and materials move through a factory. This interview tests whether you can measure work carefully, identify waste and suggest improvements that are safe and workable. The panel also looks for respect for operators who understand the process first-hand.

How to prepare

  1. Revise process mapping, time studies, line balancing, capacity and common forms of waste.
  2. Prepare a project where you used observations or data to improve a process.
  3. Practise explaining how you would separate normal variation from a recurring bottleneck.
  4. Think about safety, quality and ergonomics when comparing layout options.
  5. Be ready to explain a simple analysis without relying on technical jargon.

Common mistakes

  • Recommending faster work without checking safety, quality or fatigue.
  • Drawing conclusions from one short observation period.
  • Ignoring operator knowledge because the proposed method looks efficient on paper.
