About the role
This interview tests whether you have the accounting foundation and careful working habits needed to begin in external assurance. The panel is looking for sound reasoning about evidence, honest communication when figures do not agree and the discipline to document each step.
How to prepare
- Revise the main financial statement assertions and match each one to a simple audit procedure.
- Practise tracing a balance from a ledger to an invoice, bank record or other source evidence.
- Refresh spreadsheet skills for filtering, lookups, totals and identifying duplicate entries.
- Prepare an example that shows how you found a numerical or factual error.
- Review how you would raise a concern without making an unsupported accusation.
Common mistakes
- Treating an invoice as sufficient evidence without considering what assertion it supports.
- Saying a figure looks reasonable without explaining a check or comparison.
- Hiding an error or delay instead of telling the senior promptly.
- Using technical terms without showing that you understand them.
