About the role

This is a fleet-level engineering leadership interview, not only a test of machinery knowledge. The panel wants to see how you set maintenance priorities, govern dry-docking and control vendors and budgets across several vessels. Good answers link technical evidence to risk, cost, availability and a clear management decision.

How to prepare

  1. Prepare an example of a recurring defect you converted into a fleet reliability improvement.
  2. Review how you build and control a dry-dock scope from condition evidence through close-out.
  3. Think through your approach to annual technical budgets, contingencies and variance explanations.
  4. Prepare evidence of managing superintendents, yards, makers and specialist contractors.
  5. Practise presenting a technical risk in language that commercial and finance leaders can act on.

Common mistakes

  • Answering as a single-vessel engineer instead of showing fleet-wide prioritisation.
  • Cutting preventive work solely to meet a short-term budget target.
  • Discussing dry-dock cost without scope control, change approval and quality verification.
  • Escalating every defect equally instead of explaining criticality and operating context.
