About the role
A field research assistant recruits participants, administers research tools and keeps reliable records away from the main office. The panel wants to see that you can follow a protocol, communicate respectfully, protect consent and respond sensibly when travel, access or equipment disrupts the plan.
How to prepare
- Practise giving a brief, neutral explanation of a study and checking that a participant understands it.
- Review how to record refusals, incomplete interviews and departures from the field protocol.
- Prepare an example of working respectfully with a community or an unfamiliar group.
- Think through backups for device failure, weak connectivity, transport delays and changing weather.
- Revise daily form checks, field notes and safe transfer of collected data.
Common mistakes
- Pressuring someone to participate because a community contact approved the study.
- Changing the wording of questions in a way that leads respondents.
- Waiting until the end of data collection to report missing or damaged records.
- Promising participants an outcome that the research team cannot deliver.
