About the award
This hackathon final asks teams to defend a technology prototype intended to improve a public service or civic process. Judges look for a well-evidenced problem, an inclusive user journey, credible technical decisions, responsible data handling and a team that made disciplined choices within limited time.
How to prepare
- Trace the problem from the user's experience to the point where the current service breaks down.
- Practise a short prototype walkthrough with a recorded or static backup for technical failure.
- Explain why the chosen technology fits the users rather than simply being available to the team.
- Review every item of data collected and remove anything the core service does not need.
- Agree which team member will answer questions about users, technology, data and implementation.
Common mistakes
- Building around what a public institution wants without showing how residents would use it.
- Assuming every user has a smartphone, steady connectivity and confidence with digital services.
- Collecting sensitive data without a clear purpose or protection plan.
- Letting the demo consume the whole presentation and leaving no time for the problem or evidence.
