About the role
This interview assesses leadership of automation and controls across a manufacturing site or network of plants. It covers PLC and SCADA architecture, instrumentation, fault diagnosis, safe software change, vendors and team capability. The panel is looking for someone who can modernise controls without creating unsafe, fragile or unsupported systems.
How to prepare
- Sketch a controls architecture you have owned and be ready to explain interfaces, redundancy and support boundaries.
- Prepare an intermittent fault example using PLC logic, trends, field checks and a verified corrective action.
- Review your process for backups, version control, access, testing, approval and rollback of controls changes.
- Choose an automation project and explain requirements, vendor governance, commissioning and operator handover.
- Think through how you would reduce dependence on a single controls specialist.
Common mistakes
- Treating a reset as fault resolution without preserving the evidence needed for diagnosis.
- Discussing software changes without version control, testing, approval and rollback.
- Accepting vendor code solely because the line runs during commissioning.
- Proposing new technology without considering spares, training and long-term plant support.
