About the role
An advertising art director owns the visual idea and guides how it is executed across a campaign. The interview will explore concept development, visual craft, collaboration with copy and strategy, and practical production decisions. The panel wants to see intentional work that solves a communications problem and holds together beyond one polished image.
How to prepare
- Choose campaigns that show both your visual thinking and your direction of other specialists.
- Prepare to explain composition, typography, colour and image choices in relation to the brief.
- Show how one visual system changed across formats without losing recognition.
- Think through examples where budget, location or timing forced a smart production choice.
- Practise separating your own contribution from the work of designers, photographers and directors.
Common mistakes
- Showing attractive work without explaining the strategic problem it solves.
- Claiming sole credit for work produced by a wider creative team.
- Relying on references so heavily that the result feels copied.
- Ignoring how the idea will work in motion, small formats or real production conditions.
