About the audition
An animated character voice audition tests whether you can create a clear character using only your voice and sustain it across different emotions. The casting team listens for truthful acting, consistency, interpretation, responsiveness to notes and clean microphone technique.
How to prepare
- Read the character brief and decide what the character wants in each audition scene.
- Practise the voice at different volumes and emotions so its key features remain consistent.
- Mark changes of intention, pauses and difficult vocal moments on the audition script.
- Warm up gently and test how close you need to be to the microphone for quiet and loud lines.
- Prepare two contrasting choices rather than adding a collection of unrelated accents or noises.
Common mistakes
- Choosing a funny sound without giving the character a clear intention.
- Changing the pitch or accent every time the line is repeated.
- Forcing extreme voices that cause strain or make words unclear.
- Ignoring a direction note because it differs from the prepared version.
