About the role
This interview covers the utilities that keep a manufacturing plant running, including electrical power, generators, steam, compressed air, water and cooling. The panel will test your ability to balance reliability, capacity, cost, safety and environmental control. Strong answers use operating data and clear contingency thinking rather than relying on equipment nameplate ratings alone.
How to prepare
- Map the main utility systems you have managed, their critical users and the consequences of each failure.
- Prepare an efficiency project and explain the baseline, measurement method and checks against hidden trade-offs.
- Review how you establish capacity using demand profiles, diversity, equipment condition and standby philosophy.
- Think through an outage response involving grid loss, generator supply and orderly production recovery.
- Prepare an example of controlling water quality, chemicals or high-energy maintenance work.
Common mistakes
- Assuming installed capacity is available capacity without checking demand, condition and redundancy.
- Claiming an energy saving without a credible baseline or adjustment for production volume.
- Focusing on restoration while ignoring safe isolation, product impact and controlled restart.
- Treating standby equipment as reliable when it is neither tested nor supported with critical spares.
