About the role
A swimming coach develops technique, fitness and confidence while maintaining close poolside supervision. The interview tests your eye for stroke mechanics, ability to plan progressive sessions and judgement when safety, swimmer welfare or parent expectations need attention.
How to prepare
- Revise common faults in each stroke and pair each fault with an observation, cue and drill.
- Prepare a session that balances technical work, conditioning and lane organisation.
- Think through the venue procedure you would follow for a poolside or in-water incident.
- Choose an example of helping a swimmer through a plateau or loss of confidence.
- Practise explaining squad placement and progress criteria in plain, respectful language.
Common mistakes
- Prescribing drills without explaining the stroke problem they address.
- Focusing on the fastest swimmers and giving little feedback to the rest of the squad.
- Continuing a session when a swimmer's symptoms require the emergency process.
- Making squad decisions to satisfy pressure rather than using clear development criteria.
