About the role
This interview tests how you would support learners with special educational needs while protecting their independence and dignity. The panel wants calm judgement, practical adaptations, accurate observations and a sound understanding of safeguarding. You should also show that you can follow the teacher's plan and contribute useful evidence about progress.
How to prepare
- Review ways to break down classroom tasks and present instructions in more than one format.
- Prepare an example of helping a learner make progress without becoming dependent on adult support.
- Practise explaining how you would respond to distress or behaviour that challenges the class routine.
- Review the correct route for reporting a safeguarding concern in an educational setting.
- Think about the observations a teacher would need when reviewing a learner's support plan.
Common mistakes
- Speaking about learners as problems instead of describing the support they need.
- Giving so much help that the learner has no chance to think or act independently.
- Promising confidentiality when a safeguarding concern must be reported.
- Changing the teacher's plan without discussing your observations first.
