About the audition

A session guitarist audition tests whether you can contribute accurate, tasteful parts under recording pressure. The producer or musical director looks for solid time, controlled tone, chart literacy, broad stylistic awareness and a practical response to brief feedback.

How to prepare

  1. Practise common progressions with a click at different tempos and subdivisions.
  2. Work through chord and number charts while tracking repeats, stops and section changes.
  3. Prepare contrasting clean, driven and ambient sounds at matched output levels.
  4. Rehearse simplifying a busy part so it leaves space for vocals and other instruments.
  5. Check every cable, power supply, battery and backup needed for your setup.

Common mistakes

  • Filling every space instead of supporting the arrangement.
  • Changing tone patches without checking their relative volume.
  • Continuing to explain a choice after the producer has asked for a different one.
  • Arriving with an elaborate setup that you cannot troubleshoot quickly.
