About the role
This interview tests your readiness to provide senior pastoral support in settings where people may be grieving, frightened or under pressure. The panel wants compassionate listening, safe boundaries, inclusive practice and the ability to guide a wider chaplaincy response during difficult events.
How to prepare
- Prepare examples involving grief, crisis support and a person whose beliefs differed from your own.
- Review how you apply confidentiality, safeguarding and referral boundaries in pastoral work.
- Think through a coordinated response to a critical incident affecting service users and staff.
- Prepare an example of supervising or coaching another pastoral care practitioner.
- Practise explaining how you document sensitive contacts without recording unnecessary personal detail.
Common mistakes
- Assuming that every person wants prayer, scripture or faith-specific guidance.
- Promising absolute confidentiality without considering safeguarding duties.
- Trying to provide clinical treatment outside the chaplain's competence.
- Speaking only about compassion without showing sound documentation and escalation judgement.
