About the role
The English teacher interview tests whether you can make language and texts understandable to secondary pupils, not only whether you know the rules yourself. The panel will look for coherent lesson design, accurate explanations, manageable assessment methods and support that keeps every pupil working towards a meaningful goal.
How to prepare
- Prepare one reading lesson and one writing lesson with clear learning outcomes.
- Revise common grammar and composition misconceptions among secondary pupils.
- Practise modelling how to improve a weak paragraph rather than simply rewriting it.
- Plan how you would assess a large set of written work efficiently and fairly.
- Choose varied texts and examples that pupils can discuss respectfully.
Common mistakes
- Focusing on terminology without showing how pupils will use language.
- Correcting every error at once without setting a clear improvement priority.
- Choosing a text but not explaining the learning it supports.
- Calling pupils weak instead of identifying a specific reading or writing need.
