About the role
A science laboratory assistant prepares practical lessons, maintains equipment and stock, and helps keep pupils and staff safe. The panel will look closely at your hazard awareness, labelling and measurement habits, incident response and communication with the teacher responsible for the lesson.
How to prepare
- Review how to assess hazards and locate the relevant safety information before preparing a practical.
- Practise describing how you would prepare, label, distribute and clear materials for pupil groups.
- Prepare an example of noticing an error, fault or unsafe condition and acting on it.
- Think through stock rotation, equipment checks and records for damaged or missing items.
Common mistakes
- Using an unclear or damaged label because the bottle contents seem obvious.
- Starting preparation without checking hazards, quantities and disposal arrangements.
- Focusing on clearing a spill before making the area safe and alerting the responsible teacher.
