About the role
A school counsellor provides an accessible first point of support for pupils while working inside clear safeguarding and referral procedures. The interview tests listening, risk judgement, record keeping and the ability to work with families and school staff. The panel is looking for empathy supported by firm professional boundaries.
How to prepare
- Review how you explain confidentiality and its limits to a pupil in plain language.
- Prepare an example of listening carefully and helping someone identify a practical next step.
- Think through the safeguarding route you would follow when a pupil may be at risk.
- Review signs that indicate a pupil needs referral to a qualified specialist or emergency service.
- Practise writing a factual case note that separates observations from interpretation.
Common mistakes
- Promising complete confidentiality before understanding the concern.
- Trying to diagnose or treat needs beyond your training.
- Recording personal opinions as if they were facts.
- Sharing more information than another staff member needs to support the pupil.
