About the role

A restaurant server welcomes guests, explains the menu, takes accurate orders, serves food and drinks and handles complaints. You work closely with the kitchen and other servers on a busy floor. The panel wants friendliness, accuracy and good teamwork.

How to prepare

  1. Study the restaurant's menu so you can describe dishes and suggest pairings.
  2. Prepare an example of handling a guest complaint calmly.
  3. Practise repeating an order back to the guest to confirm it.
  4. Think through how you handle several tables at once without forgetting anyone.
  5. Be ready to explain how you help teammates when the floor gets busy.

Common mistakes

  • Knowing nothing about the restaurant's menu.
  • Arguing with guests instead of fixing the problem.
  • Showing no interest in teamwork with the kitchen and floor staff.
