About the programme
A reception class readiness conversation is a gentle way for school staff to see how a child communicates, follows simple directions and approaches play-based learning. It may include a short story, counting, sorting or turn-taking activity rather than a formal interview.
How to prepare
- Let the child practise answering simple questions in their own words.
- Use everyday objects for relaxed counting, matching and sorting games.
- Read a familiar picture book together and discuss what happened.
- Practise simple routines such as tidying away materials and taking turns.
- Keep preparation playful and avoid teaching a memorised speech.
Common mistakes
- Answering for the child before they have time to respond.
- Rehearsing polished answers that do not sound natural.
- Putting pressure on the child to read or calculate beyond the task.
- Hiding useful information about how the child settles into a new setting.
