About the role
This interview tests whether you can turn design information into reliable commercial advice throughout a construction project. The panel will look for accurate measurement, sound contract judgement, fair valuation and the confidence to challenge unsupported costs with evidence.
How to prepare
- Review how you measure work and structure a bill of quantities from drawings and specifications.
- Prepare an example of assessing a variation, including the contract basis and supporting records.
- Practise explaining a tender comparison where exclusions make the headline prices misleading.
- Think through how you forecast the final cost and report emerging risks to a client.
- Revise the payment, retention and final account processes used on projects you know well.
Common mistakes
- Quoting rates without explaining their source, date or adjustment for project conditions.
- Accepting the lowest tender without checking omissions, qualifications and arithmetic.
- Discussing contract decisions without identifying the clause, records or notice involved.
- Claiming the whole team's commercial result without separating your own contribution.
