About the programme

This is a competitive interview for a research-focused public health degree, often centred on a proposal and its fit with available supervision. The panel looks for a worthwhile question, defensible methods, ethical and feasible fieldwork, and evidence that you can develop an independent argument while responding to critique.

How to prepare

  1. Reduce your proposal to a clear question, expected contribution, study population, design and analysis plan.
  2. Identify the strongest alternative method and explain why you did not choose it.
  3. List likely sources of bias, missing data, access problems and ethical risk in the project.
  4. Read relevant work by potential supervisors and explain the fit without relying on flattery.
  5. Prepare realistic changes you could make if recruitment, data access or resources became constrained.
  6. Check the institution's official programme information for current proposal and admission expectations.

Common mistakes

  • Defending every sentence of the proposal instead of engaging with a useful challenge.
  • Claiming that the study has no bias or ethical complications.
  • Offering a question too broad for one research degree.
  • Naming advanced methods without explaining why they answer the research question.
  • Depending on data or participant access that has not been investigated.
