About this interview
A psychiatry residency interview examines how you understand mental distress, formulate risk and communicate when trust is fragile. The panel looks for careful assessment, humane language, ethical judgement and plans that use the wider clinical and social support network.
How to prepare
- Practise presenting a mental state examination and a concise biopsychosocial formulation.
- Review structured assessment of self-harm, suicide, violence, vulnerability and self-neglect.
- Revisit capacity, consent, confidentiality and least restrictive care principles.
- Prepare an example of remaining calm and curious during a difficult clinical interaction.
- Check the official training body and programme information for current eligibility and document requirements.
Common mistakes
- Using stigmatising labels instead of describing observed symptoms and behaviour.
- Reducing a risk assessment to a checklist without a clear formulation.
- Assuming that disagreement with treatment automatically means lack of capacity.
