About the role
A protection assistant helps people access support safely and assists with referrals, community outreach, monitoring and confidential records. The panel is testing whether you protect dignity and choice, understand the limits of your role, recognise urgent risk and handle sensitive information carefully.
How to prepare
- Review the ideas of do no harm, informed consent, confidentiality and non-discrimination.
- Practise explaining a referral without promising that another service will accept the case.
- Prepare an example of listening to a sensitive concern calmly and respectfully.
- Think about barriers that can stop different groups from reaching services safely.
- Review how you would report an urgent protection concern through an approved internal route.
Common mistakes
- Pressing someone to disclose more than they choose to share.
- Promising complete secrecy when safeguarding procedures may require limited escalation.
- Trying to investigate an allegation instead of recording and referring it safely.
