About the role

A project manager plans the work, keeps it on schedule and budget, manages risks and issues and keeps everyone informed. Day to day you run meetings, chase actions, update plans and report status honestly. The panel is deciding whether you can deliver and handle stakeholders when things slip.

How to prepare

  1. Prepare two projects, one that went well and one that went wrong, and what you learned from each.
  2. Know your numbers for each project, including budget, timeline, team size and outcome.
  3. Be ready to explain how you track risks and what you did when one came true.
  4. Think through how you handle a stakeholder who keeps changing the scope.
  5. Practise giving a short status update that a busy director can absorb in a minute.

Common mistakes

  • Reciting a method or framework without showing how you used it on a real project.
  • Hiding bad news or presenting every project as a success.
  • Taking all the credit and saying little about the team.
