About the role

A procurement officer buys the goods and services the business needs at the right quality, price and time. You source and evaluate suppliers, run tenders, negotiate, raise orders within controls and track supplier performance. The panel is checking your commercial sense and your integrity.

How to prepare

  1. Prepare a negotiation you led, what you gained and how you kept the supplier relationship.
  2. Be ready to walk through how you evaluate and compare suppliers fairly.
  3. Think through how you handle a supplier who keeps delivering late or short.
  4. Know how currency swings and import delays affect pricing and lead times.
  5. Be clear on how you handle gifts, conflicts of interest and pressure to favour a supplier.

Common mistakes

  • Focusing only on price and ignoring quality, delivery and total cost.
  • Being vague about controls and approvals in the buying process.
  • Claiming savings that came from lower volumes rather than better deals.
