About the role

A post-harvest officer protects crops after they leave the field by improving handling, drying, cooling, storage, packaging and movement. The panel is looking for crop-specific judgement, disciplined records and the ability to find where physical or quality losses occur. Strong answers balance urgency with evidence and explain how teams will apply the control in practice.

How to prepare

  1. Review the main causes of mechanical, moisture, temperature and pest damage for crops you know.
  2. Prepare an example of measuring a loss point and changing the handling process.
  3. Think through how you would respond to a storage alarm, delayed transport or power failure.
  4. Revise lot identification, intake, inspection and stock movement records.
  5. Prepare to explain how harvest maturity and buyer requirements affect handling choices.

Common mistakes

  • Suggesting the same handling method for grain and highly perishable produce.
  • Focusing only on visible waste and overlooking loss of grade, weight or shelf life.
  • Making a dispatch decision without checking temperature history and product condition.
  • Describing traceability without explaining how lots remain separate during movement.
