About this interview
A PhD confirmation and progression panel reviews whether a doctoral project is sound, sufficiently advanced and manageable within the remaining period. The panel tests your command of the field, the evidence behind your decisions and your ability to respond constructively to scrutiny.
How to prepare
- Revisit your research question, intended contribution and the main literature that frames the project.
- Map each claim about progress to evidence such as completed analysis, fieldwork or drafted chapters.
- Prepare a concise defence of your methods and the alternatives you rejected.
- Identify the project's main limitations and explain how you will manage or report them.
- Build a realistic work plan that includes dependencies, ethics approvals and contingency time.
Common mistakes
- Reporting activity without showing what intellectual or practical progress it produced.
- Defending every early decision instead of acknowledging justified changes.
- Presenting tentative findings as settled conclusions.
- Offering a completion plan that ignores access, approval or analysis risks.
