About the programme
A computer science PhD panel tests whether your proposed problem is novel, technically sound and researchable. Expect close questions about assumptions, related work, baselines, evaluation and the limits of your claims. The panel also wants to see that you can adapt when experiments fail or resources change.
How to prepare
- State your research problem, proposed contribution and evaluation plan in plain language.
- Compare your approach with the strongest relevant methods rather than weak baselines.
- Review the algorithms, proofs or systems concepts on which your proposal depends.
- Identify dataset limitations, validity threats and computing constraints before the panel does.
- Prepare to explain one failed technical attempt and what it taught you.
- Check the programme's official guidance for current proposal and application requirements.
Common mistakes
- Calling a system novel without comparing it with recent related work.
- Choosing only favourable datasets or measures for the proposed evaluation.
- Using technical vocabulary without explaining the underlying reasoning.
- Promising results before acknowledging assumptions, constraints and failure cases.
